Welcome to Bottom Line Bookkeeping & Tax!

Bottom Line Bookkeeping & Tax dates back to 2006, when Bill Brough started doing income tax preparation after years of being self-employed and running not one but two successful businesses: Laser Technologies, one of the first laser printer service, repair and toner cartridge recycling firms in the country; and Content Development Group, providing research and website development on a contract basis to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Meanwhile, Superior Accounting was launched by Ben Fellmeth after graduation from college with an accounting degree. Ben started and ran several small enterprises while a student, including contracting to make alarm sales and an auto detailing business.

Bill and Ben were introduced to each other in 2013 through a business associate they had in common. They immediately felt a mutual respect due to their love of good, old-fashioned entrepreneurship, and especially their shared passion for outstanding customer service. Bill was looking for someone to help with the bookkeeping load as his tax practice took off, and Ben was likewise interested in expanding into tax preparation but wanted to remain focused on hands-on accounting. Each filled the other’s need, and they formed a strategic partnership that same year.

William Brough

William Brough, MBA, PB, came to the world of ledgers and tax returns by an unlikely route, which he calls “my ricochet career.” He majored in music, and spent time as a songwriter in Los Angeles, even landing a spot on a production team for a Stevie Wonder spin-off called Writer’s Quarters West.To help make ends meet for his young family, Bill started a small business in 1988. “I envisioned doing it part time, and still keeping a foot in the music industry. But it quickly consumed all my time and energy, and I discovered — to my astonishment — that I enjoyed it.”

Running a business required learning how to keep the books, which led to an MBA in finance and accounting. Eventually, Bill was hired by Universal Accounting Center in Salt Lake City to teach their unique bookkeeping and tax preparation courses to students from all over the country. He also worked several seasons as a tax professional for H&R Block.

In 2008, UAC completely revised their tax curriculum, The Professional Tax Preparer. Bill was the principal author of the new course, meaning that when it comes to taxes, he can literally say he “wrote the book.”

Today, Bill maintains a growing accounting practice while still writing and recording music on the side. He is also a speaker on tax topics for Lorman Education Services, and a former adjunct instructor of financial accounting at Salt Lake Community College. Bill is currently President of the Utah chapter of NATP (National Association of Tax Professionals).

Ben Fellmeth

Accounting Manager

Ben Fellmeth is an entrepreneur turned accountant. Before graduating with a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 2009, Ben put himself through school by starting and operating several businesses. Upon graduation, he worked for a year managing a small accounting firm, at which point he started a new company specializing in outsourced accounting, bookkeeping, and financial consulting for small businesses. He has been doing that ever since. As much as Ben enjoys the actual accounting, his true passion lies in helping small business owners succeed in growing their businesses. “I love working with small business owners who share an entrepreneurial spirit, and who want to grow their businesses in order to better their communities and provide employment opportunities for others,” he states.

After tax season, Ben spends his time in the outdoors hiking, four-wheeling, boating, and camping, although he rarely shares this information with clients, knowing that it’s important to keep up the “nerdy accountant” reputation.

Ben is a Certified QuickBooks Pro Advisor, and can answer any question you have when it comes to your books. He loves working with people, and prides himself in providing not only a high quality accounting service, but the highest level of customer service.
